Update 11 Referendum Challenge Day 2

Dear Friends,

This morning Senior Counsel Paul Sreenan finished laying out our case(s). He contrasted the governments “information” campaign with the Referendum Commission’s campaign. The first effectively a Yes campaign, the second neutral.
This over, Mr Sreenan called our first expert witness, Mr Bruter, a reader in Political Science from the London School of Economic and an expert on election advertising. He discussed voter reaction to the government’s illegal campaign and showed that in masquerading as neutral information it would have a greater effect on the vote. He was not cross examined but will have to come back at a later stage for that grilling.
Joanna Jordan, the petitioner was in the witness stand next. Her description of her two weeks campaigning really brought the referendum period back to me. Distributing very limited leaflets, making handmade signs. People wondering how she could possibly be against children by asking for a NO vote.  The government’s counsel tried to trip her up but she stayed composed.
Finally Nicholas Cargin was sworn in. He is a handsome UCD student who read the government’s leaflet thinking it was neutral and on that basis voted yes. When he learned about the Supreme Court ruling in McCrystal he thought that if he had known he would have abstained. After the McCrystal full judgment he realised that he should have voted no. He was clear and definite and a great witness.
Tomorrow is a bumper day with psychologist Gerry Fahey, John Waters and others all testifying. It starts at 10:30 in Court 11, Four Courts Dublin…all welcome.
God Bless
Kathy

It gives me hope to see that we still have people with integrity, who care enough to take this ordeal upon themselves for love of our Children and our country..
